No I didn't read the books I just read TvTropes a lot who knows
 
I haven't watched the episode yet but Halbrand is supposedly Sauron because the Numenoreans did imprison him on their island for a time and he corrupted them. The expedition was supposed to be the Faithful (to the Valar) but that glossed over for horsies and swords if we're doing all that right now
