people think classic was some mythical pvp utopia. it wasn't. for the most part it was a bunch of people hand holding and exping in off the path areas to maximize the pve grind as quickly as possible. as soon as people hit 50 the server pop started to dramatically drop off.

when has the server not been "dead"? there has never been consistent contesting since this server started. the most we've ever seen is maybe 2 weeks in a row of 2 guilds fighting. the reason for this is because of the player base. those interested in a weekly raiding guild all congregate in the same guild, those interested in their KDR have been in their own guild. it's been this way since holo vs. nihilum, founding fathers vs. nihilum, azrael vs. nihilum, holo vs. good guys. no wipe will ever change this. people who care about raiding and killing dragons will continue to do so, they'll do it weekly, and those who don't care will stop logging and cry zerg.
until the other side starts to "care" about contesting, the server will always be what it is. your magical red99 utopia has never existed, and never will, without a player base change.

HB you keep blaming the playerbase and game mechanics for the ghost periods of red99. Each time the playerbase plummeted in the past 4 years has been a result of staff neglect. Do you not remember why red dawn failed? For how long did you plead with the staff for an exp boost (and rightfully so)? As soon as the group bonus went in, the playerbase skyrocketed... again. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that you're off base. Every time red99 is shown some love from staff, the playerbase goes up. Every time the staff makes changes based on what the people playing red99 suggest, the population goes up.

The reason people like vanilla EQ pvp is because someone wearing shit they picked up while leveling in Unrest, MM, Guk, etc aren't going to get automatically shit stomped by a raid geared toon. Plus you don't have insanely overpriced and difficult to acquire class defining spells to deal with. Also, with a few exceptions in zones like South Karana or OOT, dying isn't that big of a deal because you're 5 minutes from a druid/wiz portal pretty much anywhere.
It may not have been a PVP utopia but at what point in EQs history was it ever that? PVP was shoehorned in and not even beta tested. Hell, at the start of RZ you could disarm a melees weapons and it would fall on the fucking ground and you could pick it up. I'd argue that PVP for the sake of PVP in EQ has always been pretty dumb, but it was the best in vanilla and got progressively worse in every xpac.
