I've lived with someone that was bipolar in my uni years and dated a chick with borderline personality disorder for 13 months. I can say with 100% assurance I do not suffer from either condition as I have lived with many people over the years and have been considered to be one of the easiest people to live with.

The DSM becomes something that has to be interpreted in practice and is very open to interpretation.

See autism spectrum controversy and the controversial diagnosis criteria for Asperger's for more details. Also see in practice how the DSM is being used to slap schizophrenia diagnoses on patients with your run of the mill bipolar disorder spectrum disorder and vice versa, because they don't want to spend the office time working up bipolar spectrum disorders which take far more work and observation.
