As for rifles vs pistols, there's a lot more than rate of fire. Rifles will penetrate much farther than pistol rounds and also will hit accurately at much greater distance. You can shoot through car doors with a pistol, or through modern engine blocks with a high-power rifle.

Automatic pistols are lousy weapons all told--their purpose is their convenience (a bad weapon on your person being more useful than an excellent rifle you left at home). Only experienced shooters get consistently good results with them. The average, not-well-trained person won't even hit the center of mass of a human size target at 100 feet with even half his pistol shots and might miss the target entirely if he tries to shoot quickly. I know this due to having watched it myself many times. A rifle at that range--or several times as far--is like driving tacks even in the hands of a fairly inept shooter.

I dont disagree that rifles and handguns are apples and oranges in terms of potential damage, but my point was: the handguns and rifles compared are both semiautomatic, and are both capable of inflicting nearly the same amount of damage in the school shootings everyone has been worked up about.

Had Adam Lanza used an Glock instead of an AR15, the outcome would be no different.

I could only think of 1 shooting instance where a rifle did more damage than a handgun could have: The DC beltway sniper (I'm sure there are others, but most would be no different if they had used a handgun instead of a "Scary black rifle"). I thought I remember the Virginia tech shooting was carried out with a rifle, but it was 2 handguns.

My point boils down to this: semi auto rifle or semi auto handgun, it makes no difference. The sick people are going to commit crimes regardless of the tool in their hands.

Disarm the law abiding citizens, and you are only ensuring the criminals have the advantage.

Disarm the law abiding citizens, and a tyrannous government meets no opposition.

The 2nd amendment was put in place to keep the government from steam rolling its citizens, it had nothing to do with "sporting" (like our current president would like you to believe) or home defense from bad guys, those are only perks.

Reapin either a decent troll or one of the most willfully ignorant individuals I've encountered. Either was thanks for the entertainment.

I know for fact he is a big troll, but I am "not sure if serious" on this one.

Who else is glad that soon we probably won't have to disarm ourselves every time we need to pass through the chicagoland area?

Ooohh, gun debate thread. How cutting edge. I'm sure there are a lot of opinions being swayed in these pages.

A private school in Central Arkansas recently voted to allow the staff to have guns on campus. This is the sign they put up.
