Florida apears to be more affected because of the narrowness of the state and being surrounded by water.
Australia has a much larger area to be affected than the usa but because its landmass is wide in the east-west directions at point of impact the water driven power of cyclones/hurricanes loses potency as it traverses landmasses.

Sucks that the positives of being very near to a coast no matter where in Florida one lives makes more chance of a strong hurricane hitting those same places.
