Rogean - at the initial login (meaning I can't get to the server list), I get the error that says "could not connect, make sure you are connected to the internet, etc etc.." (can't get exact text now)

This is via a University wireless system which requires initial authentication.

What do you suggest?

Oh it worked.. (I knew there was a way to test outbound ports, but I couldn't recall on my last post)

Ok - here's how we normally test ports - like RDC and such, to make sure they are open on servers, say if one isn't responding etc..

Open a command prompt.
Telnet to the host/port you are curious about.

So here, try: telnet 67.23.190.71 5998

You should just get a cursor if the port is open. Otherwise it will tell you it cannot make a connection.

And it worked from work here - so I can play EQ from here, OMG! But I'm not gonna risk it, even though... naaa, not going to.

If you are on Win7 and Telnet's not enabled:
http://www.fettesps.com/windows-7-enable-telnet/

Or I'm sure something likek 'puTTY' would work too.

You can flip IP's - ports to your heart's content as well.

So using this I can test whether I can make a connection - but if i can't, how do I "flip ports" to be able to login?

If you are trying to connect to a different host.

For anyone trying to get to EQ EMU - that address is it. I meant, if you want to test connections to login server, etc...

You'd have to dig up various port info here, I don't know them off hand.. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

So if the login server's port is '2998' you'd just change it to:

telnet 67.23.190.71 2998

That is *only* trying to test the 'destination' - aka EQ EMU servers.

If you were testing a SMTP (mail) server, then you'd have to change it to...

telnet 192.168.0.1 25 (or whatever the IP is - see how the port changed for SMTP?)

Telnet IP PORT

Oh and sorry... if you cant...

Well... other than having them open up the ports on their firewall/proxy server... You'd have to find a proxy that will allow you to tunnel/NAT various ports. In other words - direct traffic across your network on port 80 or something that's open to the correct ports on the EQEMU server.

I don't know of any offhand.. most all 'web proxies' are just for port 80 traffic.

Not sure if you could get that done - although... I found some posts on something called "Wimba Live Classroom" that seems to use port 5998...

lol

Now if it was me, I'd whine and say I use it for religious studies or something and see if they would allow outbound connections on it - that's more involved.

Might be better off getting dial-up or an AirCard if you really are going to need a connection where it's otherwise blocked. But maybe some other folks have some inventive ideas.

Thanks Overcast.

It is odd that i've been able to play a number of other games (wow included) on the same University network...but they do have different hubs at different locations which might have different security settings.

I'll try one of the more open ones near our Library...

If you are talking in your dorm or something - I'd at least try to get an exception from the IT department for it. Heck, just be honest. Works best most of the time.

Of course, if you are playing from your desk, while 'working'... different story I guess [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I found this on EQEmu:

This usually means there is a network problem. Either your network is blocking port 5998 or your router may just be having issues that need to be corrected. If you live in a dorm or are playing from a public network, it is probably going through a proxy and that means they are most likely blocking port 5998, so you won't be able to play.

I'm not playing from a dorm, but I was going to do things during my lunch break or just before I begin work (since I get here way early). Probably not worth asking for an exception...I'll probably find a local wireless network close to my school to visit before i go to class.

For the record, I also tried 5999 (the port given for SoF users), and that yielded the same result.

You can't telnet to UDP ports. Telnet uses TCP.

That isn't a valid test.
