Molly isn't actually X. Molly is the powder itself. X is a tablet that contains multiple inputs, including but not exclusively comprised of molly.

"X" is short for ecstasy, the common "street name" of MDMA.

MDMA can generally be purchased in 2 forms (well, 3, but the third isn't important for this):

The first is pills, usually referred to as rolls. These should be pure MDMA but are usually mixed with a number of other drugs and many don't contain any MDMA at all.

The second is pure powder which should be pure MDMA. Sometimes the powder is something else, and sometimes it's mixed with other stuff, but usually it's pure and better than rolls.

It's all MDMA theoretically. Molly is just a term created so you know what form you're getting it in (usually the superior powder form). The story I heard is that Molly is a derivative of "molecule" as in ecstasy is one molecule away from meth (considering the popularity of substituting female names for drug names ie. Lucy, Lindsey, etc).
