I think the decision to base it on new stories (Nothing from EU) has pros and cons. They won't have to worry about being tied to any book or etc, and people won't be able to predict the movie, which makes it more appealing.
That's as much a safeguard as anything. If the new stories blow, the backlash isn't quite as severe from the hardcore fans - they'll be able to continue with life and not "/wrists" knowing that their precious original trilogy at least hasn't been desecrated.
