To the OP. My first toon on Red I did just what you are asking. I even did trade skills to make my own armor. Even raised fishing to eat. I sort of wanted to start out like I did in 2000 with nothing given to me but earned.
But you had better have thick skin because you will get your ass handed to you OFTEN with twinks butt raping you with a LOT better gear and mana pool to use. But I found it very rewarding to go that route. Lot of satisfaction knowing what you have you earned the hard way. And you learn a lot of new zones and areas doing it. I would highly recommend you doing it.
