If it's a forum petition, it helps to bump it once a day. If it's a petition in-game, depending on the issue, you might want to refresh it every now and again (e.g. if it's something the GMs can't do while you're logged out, you might make the petition, log out, and then a GM sees it and clears it since they can't do anything). Be polite and don't spam, though, obviously.
