Default Valentine's Day

What are you and your significant other doing for Valentine's Day? Is Valentine's Day even relevant for those of you who are older / have been married a while?

I'm doing the same stuff I do any other night, and she'll be wishing I was "romantic."

Quote:
While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat's hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

Interesting Roman history in your post. I go crazy over anything about ancient Rome. They facinate me, those Romans. HBO's "Rome" still one of the best shows ever created.

Rome has been on my to-watch list for a while now. Have heard very, very good things.

I think we're going to go to The Melting Pot. Fondue is way fun, but way too expensive for anything other than a special occasion. So this will be our one fondue experience of the year. Plus this is our ~first Valentine's Day~ so I don't feel bad about splurging a bit. Ordered him a few neat things earlier today, too.

Then we're going to go see The Monument's Men after that (comes out on the 14th!). Then.... a romantic evening of League of Legends and vodka after that perhaps? Glad it's on a Friday night.
Sounds like a fun night. Have a good time. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

And yes, it's an awesome show. Season 2 was a bit rushed because they were canceling it but I still loved it. Whoever was in charge of the cast's wardrobe deserved an award. An amazing job. Made me wish Roman style for ladies would come back around.

One of my favorite "bitches of Rome" scene. (No spoiler)

Lucius Vorenus is my hero. Nothing better than watching him distribute his version of justice with impunity. I miss that show.
