Playing with friends on the same network

My friend and I will be play together this evening, but we will be on the same internet connection. At the moment my friend is in the process of installing, and hasn't made a character yet. How do I make sure all is gravy with the server mods? I know that dual boxing is illegal so I just want to make sure we are clear [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
