Have you considered a shaman? Not an arcane caster, but not nature either. Fills the utility, group, buffing, solo ability roles well.

I second a try at SHM, versatile and necessary utility among the masses. Capable of holding your own, not a pet's pet class, a lot of great casts, nowhere near a typical melee class in my mind..
Otherwise I suggest other Hybrids. I think Hybrids are your answer without you yet realizing why or how.
