Yeah, it's the original game, or as close to it as can realistically be expected. It's a 99.5% accurate replica of the way Everquest was at this point in its progression, which is currently at the end of Velious for both green and blue. There are essentially no deviations from the original game unless you carefully research something and discover that some mob was meant to spawn three meters further to the left than it does here. For all intents and purposes, it's the exact same as the game was back then.

If/when a green 2.0 launches, it will be in the state that Everquest was in at the very start in 1999, just as green 1.0 was, meaning no Paineel/Warrens right at first. There is no Nexus, no Gloomingdeep or whatever that starter dungeon was called that EQ added in some future expansion. If you make a character right now, you will begin in the town that is designated as the starting area for that race/class/deity combination. There is no Plane of Knowledge, no Nexus, nothing that didn't exist in Velious.

And if a new server launches, it will start without Kunark and Velious. These will then launch after the same amount of time as it took for these expansions to launch back then. There is currently speculation that a green 2.0 could launch sometime this year, but nothing is known for certain and might just not happen, so you don't have to feel like it's a waste of time to start now. In all likelihood, the green server will remain the latest server for at least another six months and quite possibly longer.

You can also start on blue, but that server is over a decade old and it's definitely a bit stagnant. Green is the more suitable place for a new player. You could also start on red if you like PvP, but that server is pretty dead and there's no indication that the staff will launch a red 2.0, despite their promises of doing so in the past.
