Was it a vendor/quest NPC you were charming?
If so, it probably means someone else gave them negative MR gear. Since patch, server reset NPCs. Gotta put your own MR gear out there and stop leeching off the kindness of others... that is, if it was a quest/vendor NPC and you had not given them negative MR gear.
