it doesn't even need to be simplified, the gov't literally already knows how much you owe/don't owe based on withholding filings. they are just lobbied hard by intuit (turbotax) to keep the process difficult so that this pointless industry can exist.
the IRS can literally just send you something in the mail every january that is either your refund check, or the bill with how much you still owe.
get all money out of politics.
