IIRC: hide/sneak in to where you're facing at an angle to both stanos and the GM - then drop hide, but not sneak and do turn-ins
The 'facing them' sneak gives you indifferent for the turn in, without hide creating the situation where it eats the item
Haven't had to do it though, so that's not confirmed on my end
