This war kind of proves it.

The Black Sea is incredibly crucial to Russia. Insanely crucial. Enough that they'll invade their neighbor to hang onto it.

Look up Murmansk. That's where Russia holds a majority of their remaining fleet, including many strategic weapons.

Finland joining NATO essentially doubled the amount of border that Russia has to defend. The Eurasian Steppe has been the focus for generations in terms of defense. It's why Russia invests so much into tanks and artillery, but now they have to think about the north. NATO can build bases on Gotland and just straight up blockade Saint Petersburg with ease.

It would be a disaster for Russia.
