In a debate, in which the subject is "god is evil" you wouldn't see the importance of coming to an agreed upon definition of what 'god' is beforehand? Without this clarification, either side when faced with indefensible stance can resort to "Well that's not what I see god as" type defense.

Lol honestly, I took a lot of debate type courses during my years at uni and have never heard of this approach. I have a feeling that if someone had cried 'Red herring!', during a clarification before the debate even started they would have been laughed off campus.
