Druid and necro is an extremely strong duo that complement each other well. If she does want a druid, then just make a mage to play with her till she hits 16 and switch.
If she wants a mage and you are just going to make a random class to get the mage up to level 16, the BEST choice is probably another mage.. I'm sure Jify would agree with me

There is not much 2 mages are going to hunt low level that can't be killed together if you stick to white cons and below.
