The war was over states' right to secede and not slavery. Slavery was on the outs anyways Lincoln used that as a platform to push his Henry Clay agenda.

You read his memoirs? It's quite clear 'honest' Abe didn't give a shit about the slaves, and why should he? He used it as political ammunition and nothing more.
They way his journals read, sounds like he'd let slavery resume once the war was over.
