The challenge modes are irrelevant because the "heroic" gear (or what used to be heroic gear in previous expansions) drops from the normal dungeons. There's no reason to do challenge modes unless you simply enjoy it, and that has nothing to do with anything. The problem with today's WoW is that nothing ensures that players have met a certain standard by the time their characters are raid-ready. Up until MoP, you had to do heroic dungeons which, while not exactly rocket science, couldn't be farmed properly by a spastic 11yo in quest greens for the wrong spec. You had to at least formulate a decent build and not be completely retarded, and the dungeons were difficult enough that they taught you the basics of gameplay. This is no longer the case, so guilds either get flooded with applications from players that literally aren't good enough at the game to raid, or have increasingly turned into private cliques that will barely speak to you if you aren't RL friends with someone. It has obliterated the WoW community. Challenge modes serve no purpose at all because they don't have meaningful rewards and are not part of the gearing-up process.
WoW lost me when it lost CC in dungeons and when classes were all made the same.
