Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive component in weed. Without going into an extremely detailed discussion, one significant side effect is that it binds to a receptor in your immune system as well as the primary receptor in your central nervous system. Toxicity is low and it's virtually impossible to overdose, but anything you smoke floods your lungs with carcinogens. As I'm sure you're already aware, smoking pot causes problems with short-term memory (cannabinoids inhibit the release of several neurotransmitters in the hippocampus).
Don't fool yourself. It's a drug.
