Ranger does good melee damage, has track (imagine if your warrior suddenly had track...), innate invis, snare + flame lick aggro kite,
can obtain a ranged tstaff, root for pets, channeling skill for pumices, hide+sneak (like insta invis cant be useful), get ranged crits on arrows with longer that spell range, true shot basically a kedge wand and piece is from the same place/similar mob difficulty + a little bit of side questing+plat, later get triple attack (did I mention melees are good in Velious) and true shot discipline, harmony is a pimp spell...
Original Avon and I had a good laugh watching he beat the snot out of people, even luzlier when he got to making dem arrows and finished his Rain Caller. People were like "lol you hit for 60 dmg with that bow", 20 arrows later and more up their ass on the way out of the zone and they plugged...

Try snare + bow + flame lick spam to kite mobs with almost any other class, or using them to track and round up mobs in outdoor zones for a quadding wizard. /shrug, I don't vote they suck.
