I've been here for a little bit so I'll share my noob experience with you:
I don't recommend rolling a non solo class. I love my halfling warrior, but truth is you're going to be soloing a LOT until you make friends.
try and start with a friend. It'll keep you motivated and give you someone to group with.
You'll run into a lot of great people willing to help you out on the way. Don't ask anyone for handouts because that's lame as hell. People are usually willing to toss you some old item of theirs though to help you out. In fact if you message me on Godlinn or Godlin I'll toss you a pugius i picked up the other day. It's like a 5/25 dagger, nothing special I suppose but it's magical

As far as classes, I see a LOT of enchanters and druids. There aren't a lot of 50+ shamans from what I hear. I recommend rolling a mage or necro for easy soloing so you can get yourself some gear for a class you might rather play. I didn't do this, and it took me something like 3-4 hours to get my first Runed Bone Fork at lvl 20ish on a halfling warrior.
roleplay. need more roleplay.
