I have always been opposed to characters being sold or traded. Alas, opposed is not the equivalent of condemned; at least not yet. My official stance to date has been these instances are 'frowned upon'.
When I initially launched the server, there were far more pressing matters on which to attend than policing trades. However, cases of players petitioning they were cheated on deals involving shared or traded accounts, I have declined to offer my assistance. Character sales or trades currently fall under 'at your own risk' situations.
That being said, there will come a time where this is against server rules. I hope that time is sooner than later, but heed this warning. Do not have your account in escrow, trade, or consignment for extended periods of time.
You might ask, how can we stop this? Whether it be through linked forum accounts, access codes, etc, I would prefer to prevent these situations than to seemingly condone them.

The sooner this happens the better, it would solve so many problems in one fell swoop, both here on the forums and in game.
There is nothing classic about this plauge of constant character buying/selling. And it facilitates a huge underground black market of those "trades that shall not be mentioned".
We need SMS Account Authentication asap too:

The symptom of "FTP", a never ending supply of new accounts and the habit of placeing a single toon on each account is not classic and brings with it many different evils. You can see this first hand on eqmac now that its free to play (i.e. as many accounts as you want).
I suggest a limit of two accounts per individual, that would allow people to ultimatly play every class there is if they would wish and would bring a ton of accountability to the player knowning all his eggs so to speak, are in one basket. Account tied to the indiviual and not transferable, just like the classic sony EQ policy.
In the same spirit as no-two-boxing rule exists to foster a classic community, we should tackle the other issues around here too that work against a "classic community" on the forums, and in game.
Yes we can. Yes we can.
