I think it's important to remember that a hybrid / racial discrepancy causes everyone around them to gain exp at an inverse rate to their penalty.

For instance, if you are suffering a 20% penalty at equal level then you can assume that they have 20% more exp than you at even level. Let's do some math.

Say at level 20 someone with no modifier has 10,000 experience point. We'll call him Adam.

At level 20, someone with a negative modifier (let's use -40%) requires 40% more exp to level. We'll call her Eve.

So, you can say that that Eve, at level 20, has 14,000 experience points.

So, Adam and Eve get together and go and exp. Together, they have 24,000 exp points. When exp is doled out, Eve will get (7/12) (58.3%) of the experience, while poor poor Adam only gets (5/12) (42.6%) of the experience.

So let's say at level 20 it takes 1000 exp points to level at no modifier. And, for ease of the maths, let's say that you're killing mobs that each give 10 exp each.

So, Adam needs 1000 to level, and is receiving (10exp * .416) per kill, or 4.16exp each.

He will need to kill (1000/4.16) = 240 mobs to get his level in this group.

Eve, on the other hand, needs 1400 exp to level. She is receiving 5.83 exp each mob.

She will need to kill (1400/5.83) = 240 mobs to get her level.

Notice that had they been separate, Eve would have taken 40% longer to level. Now they are leveling at the same rate.

The takeaway of all this?

While grouping, penalties and bonuses get normalized so that all members share the penalty. Specifically, lower leveled people and those w/ + modifiers are penalized while the higher levels and those with negative modifiers receive a reduced sentence.

For this reason I am not sure why SKs and Rangers, hybrids, et. al always complain about 'how long' it takes to level up. As long as you are grouped you are exping at the same rate as everyone else with accordance to level. While it does take you more exp to level, you are being given more exp as you go. The only time the penalty really comes into effect is when you solo. This is the main reason why people will deny higher levels and hybrids into the group, as everyones exp becomes drastically lowered to compensate for their penalty while they suck up more exp to get the same percentage of level each turn.
