It's not really an issue of jerks, it's an issue of etiquette. People don't like begging. TBH, you don't need much by way of gear to get started. If it hasn't been given to you yet, though, here's a link you need to look over (and bookmark the Wiki). I made 25p today dumping 5 stacks of bone chips my Wizard had because he simply has a fetish for blowing up skeletons. 25p may not seem like much, but I might get lucky and get some banded for my Bard with it...
