tl;dr
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
If you want to own guns that reflect a "modern" regulated militia, then it is required to serve in your state national guard aka your militia. No questions. You need to be deployed now- good you have your M-16. Why should you own a military grade weapon if you have no use in using it in a qualified way. (Think Switzerland or mandatory military service countries)
The right to own guns is contingent on protecting your community or participating in a regulated militia (i.e. not Billy Bob's pals that are a "neighborhood watch").
If you want to own sporting type weapons, including but not limited to bolt action rifles, pump or double barrel shot guns, bows, and certain handguns appropriate for hunting, then do so. But register them when you buy your hunting stamps from your state Department of Natural Resources (or whatever).
Not hard.
