I had wondered if they were going to even put those in, since these creatures never make another appearance anywhere else in Tolkien's works. I don't think they added anything.

They are the same thing in Middle Earth.
I am kind of a purist, but the embellishments were not bad to me. A lot of the added stuff was part of the story but in different works. I like how the beginning takes place the morning before the Fellowship opens; nice touch.
