If you're worried about buying spells don't be. Around level 20 is when mobs start dropping fine steel weapons this will be more than enough to take care of spell purchases.

I've played casters before, and spell money has
always been a problem. Some people manage to be rich and never need to care about this sort of thing, but that person has never been me. It's always been scary when you get to a spell level, and people expect you to have certain spells when you don't. The other people in the groups usually get the loot, and you've spent all your money on gems to buff them with.
