From the sound of it, you might be having trouble with your VPN box's upload speed. What is your service provider? Is your main box in a cloud or is it your own personal one? The hardware on your tablet seems sufficient enough as Orruar pointed out. The problem with a lot of household connections is that they provide 100Mb down, but their up speed is like 1-2Mbps which would be problematic when you want to keep 100fps. A lot of ISPs also say your up-speed is greater than it really is I find.
Also, what protocols/apps are you using to get a remote desktop on your mainbox? You might want to look into some compression options. My friend can game with his older tablet from his linux box back home but he is ridiculous with XServer.

I use comcast where i live, its like 32 down but like you said pretty terrible upload speeds. the app im using is called team viewer.
