Did you use the MLB rules in your leagues? And were your leagues were serious enough that the umps even knew the rules? You sorta illustrate your ignorance again by suggesting high school baseball is serious youth baseball. Dude, I rode a chartered bus out of state as a ten year-old to play baseball. A bus, dude.

The intent of the rule is to keep baserunners from escaping a rundown by veering wildly off the basepath. It is not meant to be applied to a play at the plate. I know this because that's how baseball's played.
