I think one mistake that nearly everyone makes is the idea that laws are the only means of controlling human action. We're conditioned so that when we identify a problem with the human condition, such as drug addiction, we immediately look to government to solve it. It's good to want to solve problems, but government is no panacea cure for all troubles. Laws have much less influence on the actions of people than we would like to think. People form their own opinions of right and wrong and act accordingly. The only thing the law brings to the table is adding the threat of violence into the equation. Everything that follows is simply fruit of the poisonous tree (the Biblical definition, not the common law evidentiary meaning).
