That's half the fun I reckon! At some point its inevitable someone will give you an upgrade to a cracked staff or rusty long sword and you'll slowly work your way up the gear charts.
Quite a few twinks among the low levels these days, which has its good points and bad points...but many of them are keen to help new players. Enjoy it, try a few starting areas on different characters...rediscover the classic stuff
