Last time this happened I was S/H in Low Guk and was in the Hall Way heading to the Exe. I was going to join the exe group but was not yet in a group. I saw a an invis Bard's little glowing ball running at me and see the message "XXX tries to cast a spell of you but you are protected" followed by the "you stop hiding" message which then leads strait to " A Wan Ghoul Knight Attacks you" and end's with the "Welcome to West Freeport" message.

Sounds like PC spells were breaking hide at least at some point to me. Was it all spells or just invisibility type spells?
