If you were the one who had to sit down to pee you'd be in 100% favor of putting the toilet seat back down. I'm also pretty sure if you'd ever have "fallen in" you would understand the desire to have the seat down without question. It's quite traumatic.
You lift it to do your thing, you put it back where you found it (i.e. down) when you're done.

Thats not an argument, the only valid argument ive seen that makes sense is that its my moms house and i should respect her wishes. And even then me and my mom have a pretty straightforward relationship so i can say stuff to her like "Yea, but dont you see it doesnt really make sense?" without it being taken as disrespectful. What she thinks is disrespectful is me not lowering the seat, not the fact that im saying she has an illogical argument. So thats why i get into an argument about it, not because i dont want to respect her wishes, its because she thinks that its the natural thing to do to respect women, but really she isnt really thinking about it much and is just entrenched in that opinion.
Its like this old person i was talking to who said its disrespectful to wear a hat in a church. And i would ask her why and she would get really annoyed because she felt she was right, but theres no logical argument to say hats are disrespectful, so she has nothing to counter me with, so goes CUZ ITS THE WAY IT IS!!! I think its just an entrenched sort of habit that if people would stop and ask themselves why for a min, they would say "Yea, why do we think that?".
As for me being more considerate if i ever fell in the toilet, i did! And you know what i can do to remedy that, check if the seat is up or down before sitting lol
By writing all this though it all makes sense, its cuz my mom whipped her boyfriend into it, so now she has the habit in her home that whenever she has to use the toilet, the seat is down. So when sonny comes to visit and that isnt beaten into him yet, he forgets and she falls in!

I guess the argument stands if youre in a household with only women, then its courtesy to put it down, but in a multi-gendered household, i view it as female capriciousness and wanting some archaic toilet seat chivalry out of their men. hehe
For another valid reason, see this picture:
