Exactly. It may be tempting, and they may deserve it. But it usually just makes things worse in the long run. They grow to fear you then grow up to take that anger out on other people. Psychotically insane/depressed, hard core alcoholics/druggies, abuse (spouse/children of their own), even criminals etc.
