It's not as hard as people may have you think. As said, there are many ways to learn the languages used in EQEmu source. There are also innumerable guides on the EQEmu wiki if your intent is to learn how to work with the EQEmu code/database/perl quests specifically.
You'll never learn it if you don't try. It's better to have tried and failed than think to yourself "it's have been cool to do that shit" the rest of your life and never know if you even could.
