There's nothing preventing people from logging onto the IRC channel and having the same conversations and global requests for help that you used the old global OOC channel for. We all can still do this. All it takes is people's willingness to keep an IRC window going in the background...

This was pretty much my attitude for a while. Then I was reminded that while I play EQ in maximized Windowed mode on my primary monitor and have IRC on the secondary screen, not everyone has the ability to have an adequate multitasking setup. I see people running IRC on backup computers, even mobile phones, but some people really can't simultaneously play while viewing IRC.
Nonetheless, I do hope IRC picks up.
Also, it would be nice to have a hosted WebIRC that automatically connects people to the appropriate server and channel. While my IRC client of choice (XChat) is wonderfully noobtastic, having something that people can simply click from the front page would be really nice. Most web IRC clients look like garbage, but I think Tiramisu looks particularly polished.
