Currently soloing and saving money - not sure if I should use money to upgrade continuously in all slots or save up and wait for things that make bigger differences like JBB, Torpor, Canni IV?

Use your money to upgrade as you go. One of the great things about classic EverQuest is that items have and retain value after purchase. So take the intermediate upgrades to make your soloing more efficient now. More efficiency leads to a higher level, which leads to more income. The faster you gain platinum, the faster you'll continue to upgrade. And every time you do, you can just turn around and sell back what you'd purchased previously, often times for a profit if you are a patient auctioneer.
