Consider trying an Iksar warrior. Their stats are roughly in line with gnomes, which you suggested in the post above, and are the only tanking class that can't currently wear plate armor. If that's not enough of a challenge for you, consider the fact that you're forced to worship Cazic-Thule and are KOS in nearly every city in the game, have virtually no mobility, and will be expected to pull aggro off of Ragebringer rogues for the first 45 levels of your already difficult existence.
