FF1 4 and 6 were the shit. Tactics, too. I loved those games to death, and while I liked 7 and 8 too, that was the unfortunate start of the series going anime-teenager instead of the more Shakespearian epic type of feel to the earlier games.
I didn't even bother with 12 or 13. I think I knew the series was dead after playing "Final Fantasy X-2", which was sort of like Charlie's Angels crossed with a pop diva dressup simulator.
