It all comes down to the million dollar question. Is the game worth the DL?

The problem with EvE is that it can take months to do anything
significant. You can have some fun...but be prepared to be in it for the long haul.
There IS a way to beat the time investment. CCP sells and has authorized sellers for PLEX, which are subscriptions that can be reimbursed in-game. These PLEX can also be traded to other players for ISK (in-game cash). Basically you can RMT a character legally.
Try the game out; see if you like it. After a while you'll be bored with your limitations, and then you can check out the character forum to take a look at what kinds of characters are being sold.
One GOOD thing about EvE is that since you CAN trade ISK in-game for PLEX...basically you can play for free, but you have to have the
ability to generate the kind of cash needed for that, and that takes a vested character...there are tons of ways to do it, however.
Pirating brings its own set of limitations, but it really is the only way a new player MIGHT generate that kind of cash.
There's too much about EvE to try to explain it. Take Sam's offer if you're interested - it's a free 21 days - and check out EvE University for help; they're a corp designed to help new players, and they've been around a loooong time.
I may resub
Dobri M one of these days...who knows? He's a glorified scout, but can generate mucho cash. Ninja-looter extraordinaire, he is (sure he can mine with a Hulk...but mission griefing tears is ownage).
One thing I can give EvE is that PvP-wise, it is the ultimate game. Nothing like taking down a Titan...especially when you realize Titans are worth thousands of dollars in RL cash. Grief knows no bounds in EvE; I'm surprised people haven't committed suicide over the grief in EvE. Maybe they have, lol...
Good example of grief...oldie but goodie.
Carebear tears!
