Something they could maybe consider doing, is providing a character lock. So if you are going to be going away for a few months or more, you could set your account to be locked, and then it wont get deleted. And maybe as an incentive to stop everyone locking their accounts, it could prevent you from playing too, until you get it unlocked, which could maybe take a week or something.
I've seen the same kind of thing done in another place, and it was all automated. But it would take some real effort to make. Not sure if there are enough players who take long breaks to justify it.
