After reading the first few "volumes" or whatever you wanna call em', I'm surprised how similar the TV show / comic series really is after not only you, but a lot of other people I've heard say they're nothing alike.
A little run down of things that are exactly the same, which is almost every important theme on the TV show (without future spoilers) ...
-Rick of course was shot, while with Shane, his partner, while on duty.
-Rick was in a coma while the "apocalypse" started, and was left behind in the hospital. (in the comic, Lori was never told he was dead, they were supposed to go back for him)
-Rick goes to Atlanta on horse back, barely makes it out alive. Horse gets devoured, Glenn saves his ass.
-Shane bones' up Lori, Lori winds up pregnant, isn't sure who the father is.
-Shane is pissed Rick made it back to them alive, wants him gone, wants to run the group his way. (Shane is killed differently in the comic, which I won't spoil incase anyone wants to read it, cause it's pretty cool, but the confrontation was almost the same.)
-Carl was shot by accident while hunting, by Otis, who then takes them to Hershal's farm where Hershal saves Carl's life.
-Hershal says they can stay until the boy is healthy, but then wants them to leave afterwords.
-Hershal keeps walkers in the barn, but they way they're all destroyed is different.
I'll stop there, but I could go on, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things as well. Now I understand a lot of these things happen in different order in the comics as opposed to the TV show, and there are different characters with different story lines in both the comic
and the show.
But if anyone else is like me and they just
can't wait until the fall for more walking dead, and they haven't read the comics, I highly suggest DL'ing them and giving em' a read if ya have the extra time.
It's definitely giving me my fix, while giving me a little glimpse as to what story lines may take shape in the future. But things will definitely
not be exactly the same so it's not going to ruin it for ya I don't think. Where I'm currently at in the Comics, some characters are still alive that were killed on the show, and vice versa.
