On live, I had pretty average gear for a 50+ monk and soloed fine (I didn't get a Tstaff or Fungi till 60). It's more a matter of location.
Sol B and Lower Guk are probably your main choices; the 40+ mobs there have far less hp and don't hit nearly as hard as kunark mobs. There are some scattered 40+ mobs in other old world zones which are actually decent soloing for a monk, but you'll have to find those yourself
