Runes absorbed all kinds of damage. I remember enchanters casting rune IV on a tank for one of the first Venril Sathir kills on my server. Venril used melee and spell damage.

Not quite, the reason this was cast on people for VS was that when a mob lifetaps someone with rune, whilst the damage still takes a portion (or all) of the rune, the damage done doesn't get fed back to the caster as hit points.
VS casted a lifetap so if he did hp damage to you he'd heal himself, hence why a rune prevented this.
I stand by that it didn't shield against dot damage though

Edit: reread what you said, yes it did protect against the spell damage that he procced... which is probably what you were saying =.=
