"Free-to-play" is always bullshit in games that once required a subscription and it usually signifies that the game is dying. They will start charging for ridiculous things, selling in-game items for dollars (which is something they would have previously banned for), making you pay for expansions/extra mercenaries, requiring payment for other things that are necessary for anyone to actually proceed in the game, etc.
I've seen this happen to so many games. In the end, those high-level players who are serious about the game end up paying more than usual for the same level of experience.
