I'm pretty sure there are some basic loot systems that all mmo's use
FFA random
* you will see very few like these depending on difficulty of the game
DKP
* A point system is established with points awarded depending on events attended and monsters slain. Highest Points wins the items.
**There are many sub-variations of this system ie. open or closed bid systems... or other such limits such as only classes that can use an item can bid on it or if a class that can't use it wants to bid they pay extra for example (I can understand the philosophy.. win bid on non class item.. then sell expensive item to buy gear your class)
***I've even seen mercenary DKP guilds lol for people who are uber geared.. everything is sold and split depending on dkp per month. and they have set charges for kills.. so show up get your money.. then after split pay for help. Those don't usually last long but i've seen them do well also .. just depends on how uber they are i guess heh.
Loot Council
*Another one i haven't seen very often. The leader or group of leaders decides who gets each drop in the guild. The effectiveness of this loot style depends on the fairness of the council and the members they recruit.
*I've seen some loot council guilds have a corp group of people that invite as many noobs as they can in a ponzi scheme type system... but i have seen a few fair ones.
Those are the three basic kinds of loot systems i've seen in my years of mmo's (not just eq specific).. i'm sure there are variations of those i haven't covered but that should be the major types and give you an idea of what to expect.
I personally like DKP depending on the variation lol.. there are always a hundred rules and bylaws but as long as everybody gets something it works out best imo.
